Essential Functions
Communication
The student must be able to accurately, effectively, and sensitively communicate information through language, reading and writing in English, and possess prerequisite computer literacy skills. Information may need to be communicated across a wide variety of communicative partners including but not limited to students, faculty, field supervisors, clients, families, and others in a comprehensive manner and under conditions where time may be limited. The student must be capable of confidential, responsive, empathic listening to establish rapport in a way that promotes openness on issues of concern and sensitivity to potential cultural differences. He or she must express ideas and feelings clearly and demonstrate a willingness and the ability to give and receive feedback.
Cognitive/Sensory
The student must have the cognitive and intellectual abilities necessary to master relevant content in academic and field=based courses at a level deemed appropriate by the faculty, professional staff, and the National Standards. These skills may be described as the ability to comprehend, memorize, analyze, and synthesize qualitative and quantitative information. The students must have the cognitive ability to interview and to interact with clients. The student must also be able to acquire information presented through classroom demonstrations and experiences in the practicum and internship components of the program.
Behavioral/Emotional
The student must possess the emotional health required for full use of intellectual abilities, the exercise of good judgment and appropriate professional behavior. The student must possess the ability to complete academic and professional (field-based) responsibilities in a timely fashion. He or she must be able to maintain mature, sensitive, and effective relationships with clients, coworkers, supervisors, classmates, faculty, staff, and other professionals under all conditions including highly stressful circumstances. The student must have the emotional stability to function effectively under stress and to adapt to environments and systems that may change unpredictably without warning. The student must be willing able to examine and change his or her behavior when it interferes with productive academic and field-based relationships
Ethical/Professional
The student must possess the ability to reason judiciously and act professionally as a student-professional. Students must be able and willing to learn and follow professional standards of practice. He or she must be able to follow NOHS/CSHSE ethical guidelines and the WWU Student Rights and Responsibilities Code. Students must maintain appropriate professional boundaries in classroom and field settings.
