GovernmentThe government and the laws they place have a huge impact on me, both good and bad. I feel very lucky that I've grown up in a country with so many freedoms. I've been given so many opportunities (like going to college) that people in other countries don't get. The problem with having a democratic government is that sometimes not everyone gets represented properly, so a lot of people don't have equal opportunities. The things the government does can effect my beliefs, values and how I view the world around me.

MediaThe media impacts every section of our lives. It informs us of world news, spreads celebrity gossip, gives us entertainment, and dictates how we should look. I've never cared much for celebrity gossip, and the news depresses me more often than not. I often turn to media for entertainment and to catch up on the latest trends. The entertainment value of the media I find very relaxing. In my free time, I like to catch up on TV shows. The ads during these shows greatly effect me, though. The ads in media play a great roll in how I view myself; there's always something wrong with how I look...I don't have the right kind of makeup, I don't shop at the right stores, I'm not skinny enough, my eyesight isn't perfect, I don't have baby soft skin, my nails aren't always shellacked...the list goes on and on.

Culture
Although the media has a great influence on my life, a lot of that influence being negative, the culture I grew up in makes up for a lot of that.
Growing up in America, I've had many freedoms. I can where whatever I like, go wherever I like, eat whatever I like, say whatever I like, and marry whoever I like. Most importantly, I can think whatever I like, and no matter where I go, I can find people who support what I believe because we live in such a diverse country. This wide variety of freedom is something of extreme value in my life.
Growing up on a military base most of my life, I've also come to value family and community. I learned to trust my neighbors and all those around me, and I learned that I can count on them when I'm in need. Learning that on the military base has helped me in life, because now I have an easier time opening up to people, especially when I need help.
